How Colour-Coding Makes Moving Less Miserable (and Slightly More Fun)
Moving to a new place is like running a marathon while juggling flaming bowling pins—it’s a lot of work, often chaotic, and sometimes involves a whole lot of swearing. But guess what? Colour-coding your stuff can save your sanity (and maybe even your relationship).
Here’s the deal: colours aren’t just for sprucing up adult coloring books or making your livingroom look cooler. When it comes to moving, they’re the super upgrade your boxes never knew they needed.
Why Colour-Coding is the MVP of Moving
Think of colours as the universal language of moving. Unlike putting written labels on each box — which get smudged, misread, or completely ignored by your "helpful" cousin—colours scream, “Hey! This box belongs in Mary’s room!” without saying a word.
Here’s how it works:
- Pick a colour for each room. Example: Mary’s room = yellow, kitchen = green, and your “mysterious box of random cables you swear you’ll organize later” = black.
- Slap those colour stickers on your boxes like you’re decorating for a rave.
- Voilà! No one accidentally drops your kitchen blender in the bathroom (again).
The Perks of Colour-Coding your Moving Boxes
- Moving Becomes a Visual Game: Instead of staring at an endless sea of brown boxes, you’ve got a bright, cheerful rainbow guiding you. It’s like playing Tetris—but with your stuff. Bonus points if you make a color-coded map of your new home. Who doesn’t love a map?
- Strategic Packing = Winning the Moving Olympics: Packing takes forever. But with colour-coding, you can break it down:
- Day 1: Pack red boxes.
- Day 2: Pack blue boxes.
- Day 3: Sit on the couch and question why you own 27 mugs.
Spreading it out keeps you sane, and the colours make it easy to track progress.
- No Guessing Games: Written labels are fine, but let’s be honest—no one has time to decipher your messy handwriting at 2 a.m. Colours? Instantly recognizable. Movers, friends, or that random guy you bribed with pizza will know where things go without asking you 1,000 times.
- Prioritize Like a Pro: Need coffee the second you step into your new home? Mark the coffee machine box with neon yellow, and you’ll have it set up faster than you can say “double espresso.” Priority = handled.
- Unpacking at Lightning Speed: Unpacking is the worst, but colour-coded boxes take the edge off. Instead of playing hide-and-seek with your essentials, everything goes straight to its designated room. You might even finish unpacking before your housewarming party. Maybe.

I've always sort of used this moving tip. I just draw a heart on the top of each box with a different colour sharpie. It's quick, easy and it works great.
