KW Moving & Storage's Moving Checklist

Moving is a stressful time and we believe the most effective way to minimize the stress is to plan ahead and be totally prepared. To help you out, below we have provided a "Moving Checklist" that you can print and use to organize your move. It contains details that are specific to residents of Kitchener, Waterloo, Cambridge and Guelph Ontario. If you have specific questions about preparing for your move be sure to contact us.

3-4 Weeks before you move

  • Identify what needs to be moved and what should be jettisoned
  • Donate, sell, incinerate or throw out unwanted items
  • Book your moving truck from KW Moving & Storage
  • Notify your parole officer/probation officer/Court appointee
  • Reserve moving elevator
  • Contact insurance company to transfer policies
  • Check with your new municipality to ensure that they allow children and pets
  • Register your change of address with the post office
  • Prepare a list of people (friends, business etc.) to update your new address
  • Contact utility companies to switch service to your new address

2 Weeks prior to the moving date

  • Contact your list of people update your address
  • Purchase necessary moving supplies - Remember KW Moving has everything you'll need.
  • Make an appointment for a service technician to to disconnect major appliances for shipment (plumber, electrician)
  • Obtain written appraisal of antique items to verify value
  • Dispose of flammable and/or illegal items that can't be transported in our truck: (you'll have to move them in your vehicle at your discretion)
    • Cleaning fluid
    • Ammunition
    • Banned firearms
    • Household cleaning fluids
    • Booze
    • Drugs (both prescription and recreational)
    • Aerosols
    • Paint, paint thinner
    • Gas cans
    • Propane Tanks

The week/days prior to your moving date (Packing Day)

  • Pack all items that will not be needed before moving day
  • Label boxes with their destination room
  • Remove pictures from the walls and box appropriately
  • Identify and photograph furniture that has dents and scratches so you can blame it on the movers
  • Designate boxes and items as "last load/first unload" items
  • Label items you need to access easily
  • Clean unwanted items from refrigerator
  • Drain fluids from items: water hoses, gas/oil lawnmowers, hydroponic systems
  • Arrange to transport house plants
  • Confirm travel arrangements for pets and family
  • Prepare an "Open First" essentials box:
    • Toilet Paper
    • Snacks/drinks
    • Scissors/Pocket Knife
    • Garbage bags
    • Pet food, dish litter and leash
    • Basic tools
    • Marital aids/lubes/gels
    • Flashlight/tourch
    • Towels
    • Dishware/cutlery for first day
    • Dish soap
    • Shower curtain
    • Important documents

Moving day (before the movers arrive)

  • Pack items in refrigerator
  • Pack all final loose items in boxes
  • Pack your pets and poke holes in the box
  • Unplug all electrical items from the power source
  • Remove all heavy and breakable items from dressers and desk drawers
  • Remove all contents from appliances
  • Remove all linens from beds
  • Disassemble bedroom sets unless the movers will be doing it
  • Before the moving men leave check all rooms, closets, cabinets for missed items

Once the movers are done:

  • Shut off water
  • Shut off A/C or turn down heat (not off in the winter)
  • Put out fires
  • Turn off lights
  • Shut and secure windows
  • Check for items left behind

Once you arrive at your new home, locate the "Open First" box and place it near your kitchen sink so you can find it after the move.
